Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, dwelt a boy named Shepherd. His life was mostly pure, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was to look after his herd of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the wind among the single tree on the mountaintop were his main associates. Day in day, looking out for his charges inculcated in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
However, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. On one such day because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome plan.
Narratives of wolves preying on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills for rescue but found no wolf.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. But, one day, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village website only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is tough to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
